This week we traveled to the Central Coast of NSW, and with the help of Central Coast Mariner’s Shane Huke, presented the Hyundai Goals for Grass Roots award for Round 7 of the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 to a brand new affiliated club, the Woongarrah FC. The Woongarrah Wildcats will start playing in local competition in the 2010 season and already have over 200 registered juniors.
The Central Coast is a fast growing community expecting an further 40,000 people moving into the Wyong districts in the next 5 to 10 years. We hear from the Central Coast Football Association Chairman, Geoff Johnson on how local clubs are ‘busting at the seams’ with the influx of new players year in, year out and the pressure this puts on finances and resources.
This new club’s motto is ‘keeping the dream alive’ and they’re hopeful that the Central Coast mariners can help them do that by ‘scoring a bagful’ against their Round 7 opponents, Gold Coast United. An extra $1,000 will be donated for every goal the Mariners score on the day! Register your club now for your chance at selection in the 2009/2010 Goals for Grass Roots program.

This week’s lucky club to receive the Hyundai Goals for Grass Roots award was the Pacific Pines Soccer Club on the Gold Coast, a relatively young club in the heart of one of Australia’s best-known tourist destinations, where football is growing in popularity at an extraordinary rate. Three years on from their beginnings where 99 junior players signed up to kick off this club, in 2009 they now boast 26 junior teams and going strong.
We talk with Shane Watson, the club’s president on what makes Pacific Pines SC so special, and we present the club with the Hyundai Goals for Grass Roots award. Gold Coast United, new to the Hyundai A-league in 2009, were represented by Scott Higgins (GCU Keeper) and striker, Joel Porter who hope to increase the win-fall for this young club by ‘scoring plenty’ in their Rd 5 clash with Sydney FC in September – an extra $1,000 for every goal they score on the day! The lucky club to receive the Hyundai Goals for Grassroots award this week is the Balcatta Soccer Club in Perth, WA. The club was founded by a group of Sicilian friends in 1977 after a ‘kick-around’ in the local park
Balcatta now has 35 teams in the 2009 season. And yet, it has remained very much a family club.
The club is responsible for developing some very big names in Australian Football. Two Socceroos joined us for the presentation to club president, Pat Luca. Socceroos Richard Garcia & Adrian Madaschi were both juniors of the mighty Balcatta.
Perth Glory keeper, Tando Velaphi believes the Glory can net a bagful of goals in their Round 3 clash against the Newcastle Jets, which will raise the clubs win-fall by $1000 per goal! Register your club now for your chance at selection in the 2009/2010 Goals for Grass Roots program.
